This bustling city is packed with things to do and see. Your days will be filled with Japanese history from teahouses, temples, palaces, museums, kabuki and sumo. However not everything is about the past, you can visit the future as well. Tokyo bay is a futuristic town with shopping centers, amusements parks, funky buildings and even an artificial sunset.
Start your day with a big buffet breakfast at Hotel New Otani, which has views of Tokyo city from 144m high. If you want something a little more informal, head to Ivy Place, which has a warm, homey feel inside and a Japanese garden outside.
Then why not continue your day with a bit of traditional Japanese gambling. Pachinko is all they play in Tokyo and it’s hard to miss because it is everywhere. This is like a vertical pinball machine, which you fire balls into. To find a machine just follow the little balls that will be scattered all over the streets, literally.
In the afternoon head to a Kabuki house or teahouse, where you can find a traditional Geisha show. Geishas are talented in many of the traditional Japanese arts, so watch as she makes tea, dances or plays an instrument. You will find this in the Shinbashi District at Azuma Odori. Or if you want something a little more masculine, head to Ryogoku Kokugikan, Tokyo’s National Sumo Hall. Here you can purchase VIP tickets to the most sought out event of the week, Sumo wrestling. Watch as these beasts try to push each other out of the circle as the crowd throws rice for good luck.
As the sun goes down, one of the best places to eat and watch the sunset is Kozue. This restaurant is set on the 40th floor of the Park Hyatt and serves a dinner you will remember forever. If you are after something a little more traditional, head to Tofuya Ukai, which is set in a Japanese garden with ponds and cherry blossom trees. There is no hall, just private dining rooms with garden views.
If you are a whisky lover and want to try some Japanese whisky, head to Zoetrope, which has over 300 types to try. If a view of the city at night is what you are after, head to The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon for a cocktail or a beer. Or for a funky night on the town, try some Karaoke at Lovenet, which has a room where you can sing in a hot tub.
